“ There was a time when Andronico's seemed on the verge of conquering the Bay Area grocery scene. They had premium produce selections, an amazing deli, meat and seafood counters with skilled butchers, a stellar wine department with hard to find labels and amazing deals, and shelves stocked with brands you couldn't find elsewhere. Then it all came crashing down and stores were being shuttered and bought out. Whether they over-extended their finances, their price points were too high, or a mix of both, the party ended and the market in Berkeley's gourmet district right next to Cheeseboard seemed doomed. But this anchor Andronico's continues to survive. While the produce no longer rivals Berkeley Bowl's quality, it's still a good step above what you can find at Safeway. The deli and meat departments have contracted and shrunk in selections, but you can still find first rate cuts. And similarly, their groceries have been winnowed down to more of the "best sellers." You can still find interesting wine deals as well, though the department is smaller. This may be out of necessity in order to survive. And if having fewer options is the price for maintaining the high quality of what is currently offered, as well as the friendly/helpful service, then that's a price I'm willing to pay. ”
“ This review is for Vic, butcher in the meat department, only. Vic is a master at what he does and his customer service is phenomenal. I came in for a leg of lamb and without me inquiring he asked if I wanted to have the H-bone removed (for ease of carving) and the gland removed (that imparts a gamey and bitter flavor to the meat). I hadn't realized that leg of lamb should be prepped in this way and it was beyond helpful for him to offer and then take care of this for me. Really exceptional (and educational) service - 5 stars for sure. ”
